This is a 1866 Coutts & Company bank check, 7.5" x 3.75", filled out and signed by Dickens, "Charles Dickens," payable to "George Dolby Esquire" for £10.0.0. The check itself is professionally inlaid into a larger sheet, approximately 5.25" x 9". The item comes encapsulated and authenticated by Beckett Authentication Services. A theatre manager by trade, Dolby was hired by Dickens in 1866 to manage his reading tour of Great Britain. The first tour lasted for three months and included London, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Aberdeen, and Portsmouth.
