The Finest--And Possibly Largest--David Bowie Signed Ziggy Stardust Print in Existence!An extremely rare original double-sided color poster, autographed and inscribed by David Bowie on the Ziggy Stardust side at full-length, ‘For John, My thanx, David Bowie’ in green fine point pen. This is the same iconic full-body image used for Bowie’s ‘Aladdin Sane’ album cover gatefold. The other side features Bowie’s ‘Aladdin Sane’ album front cover image and has been signed and inscribed by the Spiders from Mars drummer Mick ‘Woody’ Woodmansey. Woodmansey has written, ‘To John thanx alot Woody’ in purple ink.
This poster was sold in limited numbers to attendees of the final show of the Ziggy Stardust Tour, on 3 July 1973 at Hammersmith Odeon, London. This would be Bowie’s legendary final performance ever as Ziggy Stardust. Very few people knew in advance that this was Bowie’s final performance as Ziggy. Bowie made the dramatic ‘retirement’ announcement from the stage: ‘Of all the shows on this tour, this particular show will remain with us the longest, because not only is it the last show of the tour, but it’s the last show that we’ll ever do. Thank you.’
D. A. Pennebaker filmed the concert and RCA recorded it with the intent of releasing a live album. Following a lengthy delay, the album was eventually released in October 1983 as a double LP soundtrack to Pennebaker's film, ‘Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture.’
This performance stands as one of the most significant in Bowie’s career. Unsigned examples of this poster are quite rare, and signed examples are virtually non-existent. Printed on the top verso of the poster is: ‘COIN DOUBLE SIDED POSTERS A DUFFY CONCEPT.’ Of course, Duffy refers to famed photographer Brian Duffy who, in 1973, photographed Bowie for what would become his most famous album cover, ‘Aladdin Sane’.
This is an historically significant piece signed by Bowie on the final night of his legendary run as Ziggy Stardust. The poster measures 20 inches x 28.5 inches. In very good condition, with overall creasing, and multiple horizontal folds.
