Offered here is a handwritten letter dated January 27, 1785 from George Washington to South Carolina Governor William Moultrie. The letter was written in the period between the Washington's time as General in the Revolutionary War and his time as the first President of the United States. During this time, Washington had retired from the military and was spending his time exploring the frontier, including his own land holdings. He was also involved in facilitating the creation of the Potomac Company. Although he held no official government position, he was still widely regarded as a major political figure in the early years of the republic prior to the first Constitutional Convention of 1787. In this particular letter, Washington introduces Governor Moultrie to Italian nobleman Count Luigi Castiglioni. The Count was one of the earliest Italian noblemen to tour the United States, traveling through the thirteen states and a portion of Canada from May 1785 until 1787. He studied various aspects of American life, particularly political institutions and the young nation's flora and fauna. Washington assisted the Count in introducing him to several important figures around the States, including Governor Moultrie - an early iteration of foreign relations with Italy. The letter is in fine condition with minor expected handling wear. It has been framed along with a photograph of Washington to a total size of 17.5" x 23". Pieces from any of our Founding Fathers are highly sought-after, and a fully handwritten letter such as this from George Washington is above and beyond typical desirability! Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
