Hendrix Acquires Recording Machines for Electric Ladyland Studios & The Tapes That Would Record His Final Days in the Studio!
A one-page document, dated April 22, 1969, for a pair of Ampex professional studio tape recording machines from Electric Lady Studios (under construction at the time), signed by Hendrix in blue ink, and also signed by Hendrix's now controversial manager Michael Jeffery in red ink (in 2009, accusations emerged that Jeffery may have murdered Hendrix by plying him with pills and alcohol in order to collect on an insurance policy he had taken out on Hendrix). The purchase totaled $84,000, with a 20 percent deposit due up front and the remainder of the balance to be paid off over the subsequent three years. Hendrix's signature authorized the $17,000 deposit.
While Electric Lady Studios publicly opened just a few weeks prior to Hendrix’s passing in Sepember of 1970, Hendrix had access to the studio during the final phase of design and construction and utilized the facility to record his fourth studio album, “Cry of Love” (which was posthumously released in 1971). Thus, the tape machines acquired as a result of this document’s execution were used to capture some of Hendrix’s final studio recordings. The document is beautifully custom matted and framed along with a dedication plaque and B&W images of the guitar legend. 26" x 38” overall.
