Hendrix Grants an Autograph Request During His Historic & Controversial Appearance at a Dead Concert!
Exceptional Family Dog Productions postcard showing Wes Wilson’s poster for a series of three Grateful Dead performances at San Francisco’s Avalon Ballroom on October 11–13, 1968, signed and inscribed on the reverse in blue ballpoint, “Love to you, Eilleen, Jimi Hendrix,” adding a small heart, and “Noel Redding.” The postcard exhibits some expected scattered surface impressions and handling wear, none of which affects the signatures' exceptionally strong appearance.
Almost as alluring as the signatures themselves is the underlying story of what happened on the fateful weekend noted on the postcard. According to accounts, Hendrix was in San Francisco at the same time as the Dead and was playing the Winterland Ballroom. Hendrix had discussed making a surprise appearance on stage at the Grateful Dead show that Saturday night (10/12), however, Hendrix missed a jam session with the group at their rehearsal hall earlier in the day, much to the disappointment of one Mr. Jerry Garcia. Later on that evening, Hendrix appeared at the concert ready to go. However, an angered Jerry Garcia apparently waved off Hendrix, still resenting being stood up earlier in the day. This encounter has become something of legend within the classic rock community, and while variations of the details of the encounter exist, this postcard represents a solid confirmation of the famed event.
