John Hancock (1737-1793) was one of the most important figures of the American Revolution and the first signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Hancock became involved in revolutionary politics early in his career and his sentiments always strongly favored independence from Great Britain. In 1774, he was elected to the Continental Congress, eventually assuming the position of President in 1776. In the eyes of the British government men such as Hancock were regarded as criminals and subject to treason, a crime punishable by death. In early 1776 a decree had been issued in England offering a huge reward for the capture of a number of leading figures deemed dangerous to the crown, Hancock among them. It was in the face of that danger, and with supreme contempt for the unreasonable authority of the British government, that Hancock, as president of the Continental Congress took great pride in becoming the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. As he boldly signed his name upon the historic document he loudly proclaimed "The British ministry can read that name without spectacles; let them double their reward." His name is now synonymous with the word "autograph". Hancock signed his illustrious name to this 2.5" x 4" document cut with one of the nicest signatures we have seen in his traditional big bold style without any signs of fading. The cut has been affixed to a larger album page for added support. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
