Interesting typed letter, signed in blue ballpoint pen “H. G. Rickover,” in which Vice Admiral Rickover writes from the latest nuclear powered submarine about its capabilities and the U.S. submarine fleet. Consisting of one page, 7.5” x 10.5,” on SS Hawkbill letterhead, November 16, 1970, the correspondence to Robert L. Michaels reads, in part: “The new HAWKBILL is…a powerful weapon against surface ships and submarines alike…In addition to the 49 attack type nuclear submarines, we also have 41 Polaris submarines and a deep submergence ocean engineering submarine, making a total of 91 nuclear submarines in operation. When all nuclear submarines presently authorized by Congress are completed, the United States will have 65 attack and 41 Polaris submarines.” In fine condition.
