The New Nine, the second group of astronauts selected by NASA on September 17, 1962 would prove to be a vital bunch in global history. With members such as Neil A. Armstrong (Apollo 11 & Gemini 8), Frank F. Borman, Jr (Gemini 7 & Apollo 8), Charles "Pete" Conrad, Jr (Gemini 5, 11, Apollo 12 & Skylab 2), Edward H. White, II (Gemini 4 & Apollo 1) and others, the group would accomplish 27 missions while sadly losing two members to aviation/space accidents. Offered here is possibly the first ever photo taken & signed of Neil Armstrong as a member of NASA following his success with the X-15 flights. Signed with an a nearly impossibly signature variation for Armstrong's NASA days, dating to circa. 1962, "To Grace, With Best Wishes, Neil Armstrong," in bold fountain pen. This official 8" x 10" NASA photo has been stamped on the reverse giving a brief description of the green astronaut. Overall in excellent condition with minor handling wear. While we cannot say with certainty this is the first ever NASA photograph signed by Armstrong, it goes without saying we haven't seen a variation even close to this offering in our & fellow auction houses archives.
