This scarce and impressive Naval commission was signed by President Martin Van Buren with an especially large and bold signature on March 5, 1839. In the document, Tyler appoints William Shuttleworth to the rank of Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, countersigned by James K. Paulding as Secretary of the Navy. The large white wafer seal is intact. There is some minor staining, specifically to the lower left corner, but overall in very good condition with no flaws to the autograph. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services. The document also contains the family lineage passed down from Shuttleworth through many generations, ending with John Springman von Kleeck.
