Civil War–dated partly-printed vellum document signed as president, one page, 19.5” x 15.5” , June 16, 1864. As the Civil War enters its final year, President Lincoln appoints William Shuttleworth to the rank of Colonel in the United States Marine Corps. Boldly signed at the conclusion by Lincoln and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. Provided with the document is the lineage of family ownership of the document, beginning with Shuttleworth in 1864 and passed on through several generations up until the most recent owner, John Springman von Kleeck. The orange navy seal affixed to the center remains fully intact. In fine condition, with heavy intersecting storage folds and light scattered foxing and soiling.
