A unique signed Civil War document, offered here is a receipt for 275 pairs of blue cloth pants for Union soldiers, dated January 13, 1862 and signed at the conclusion by Chester A. Arthur. During this time, Arthur was the Engineer-in-Chief of the New York State Militia, assigned as Brigadier General to the quartermaster department and in charge of housing and outfitting the troops that poured into New York City. This uniform order is appropriate and relevant to his position at the time. An extremely rare early career signed document from Arthur, for the purchase of the blue uniforms that so many associate with the Union troops to this day. In fine condition with several horizontal creases and light toning. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
