Typed letter as president signed “Ron,” one page, 7" x 10.5", White House letterhead, December 2, 1986. Letter to Dolores Ballachino. In full: “Dead Dolores: It was good to hear from you to know how much you have come to love the West. I'm a Midwesterner (Illinois) but I became a westerner after a short time and know how you feel. I guess the port Robert W. Service said it when he wrote the line, "The land of gold held him as if in a spell." I'm sorry campaigning doesn't provide time for visits but it was great to see you. If I didn't look like I recognized you, put it down to self-conciousness. I'm always aware that I'm facing the crowd and they'll wonder what I'm doing if I appear to be communicating with someone they can't see. Thank you and Paul for all you did in effort to get us aa Senator. You have every right to be proud because I'm convinced you made the difference in your precinct. You are right about the media in this Iran thing. I'be told them the absolute truth and they just wont accept it. I think, however, we are moving a couple of fronts that will put out the fire and break up the lynch mob. Please thank Sabrina for me for her letter and tell her she is still in our prayers. Sincerely, Ron. ” Ronald Reagan would face adversity in his second term with senior administration officials secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Iran, which was the subject of an arms embargo. The administration hoped to use the proceeds of the arms sale to fund the Contras in Nicaragua. Under the Boland Amendment, further funding of the Contras by the government had been prohibited by Congress. Both Reagan & Bush Sr. would defect the media storm or "lynch mob" as Reagan writes, but as time has passed more information regarding the activity has surfaced where the President had more involvement than originally admitted. A tremendous letter with great content!
