This letter, dated May 13, 1792, was written from James Monroe at the time that he was Senator of Virginia to influential political economist Tench Coxe. The strides Monroe made and bonds he formed during his tenure in the Virginian senate did much to propel his political career, including working with then-Congressman James Madison and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson to organize what became known as the Democratic-Republican Party in 1792. That year's political election (just 6 months hence the writing of this letter) was the first instance of American partisan politics. Coxe was also appointed revenue commissioner by President George Washington in June of that year. In the letter, Monroe details his plans to pay Coxe back for some funds that were loaned and asks for some additional funds that he wishes to use as insurance money on the road. He finishes with mentioning, "I had intended to have furnished you with some queries upon an interesting political subject, but have been so engaged during the session & since...that I have not been able to make the proper division of the subject, or present it to your consideration in that propitious manner I wd. wish. If however you mean to develop it I will write you advice on it in the course of a few weeks." An exceptional piece of correspondence between two big political players, dating to the time of the formation of America's now notorious two-party system. The two page (front and back) letter has been written completely in Monroe's hand and signed at the conclusion, "Ja's Monroe". In fine condition with light toning surrounding the first page and some paper loss to the edge, not at all affecting the contents of the letter. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
