The Foundations of a Masterpiece: Coppola Agrees to Re-Write the Script for "Apocalypse Now"

Rare and desirable signed document, 20 pages in total, 8.5" x 13", March 1, 1976. Writing Agreement between Coppola Cinema Seven and The Coppola Company, in which the latter “agrees to furnish…exclusive services of writer for the purpose of writing and delivering to Producer a rewrite and, at Producer's option, revisions thereto, of certain unpublished screenplay written by John Milius entitled 'Apocalypse Now'." The entirety of the document includes the initial loan-out agreement, a list of the standard terms of agreement, and an acknowledgment portion. Signed on the final page in black ballpoint by Coppola. In fine condition.

As a follow-up to his Oscar-winning The Godfather: Part II, the ambitious Coppola sought to adapt Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness through the lens of the Vietnam War. Plagued by a myriad of setbacks--most notably difficulties in getting the studio to approve what was deemed an acceptable script for a sensitive subject--the film was ultimately released in mid-1979, receiving rave reviews and a wealth of award nominations; the film earned Coppola three Oscars nominations for Best Picture, Director, and Writing. An incredible document related to Coppola’s dark masterpiece! Accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA.
