Offered here is a rare and historically significant original albumen photograph by legendary Civil War photographer Mathew Brady, capturing General Ulysses S. Grant and his staff at City Point, Virginia, in June 1864. This powerful image reflects the gravitas and strategic coordination of Union leadership during a pivotal moment in the final year of the American Civil War.

The photograph measures 7.75" x 5.5", mounted on its original Brady studio card to an overall size of 10.5" x 8.2". The mount is clearly stamped by Brady’s studio, further verifying the photograph’s authenticity and provenance.

Identified in the image (standing, left to right):

Captain Henry W. James

General Ulysses S. Grant

Major Michael Morgan

Captain Peter Hudson

Seated, left to right:

Colonel John A. Rawlins (Grant’s Chief of Staff)

Colonel Cyrus B. Comstock (Engineer)

Lieutenant Frederick Grant (General Grant’s son)

Colonel Orville E. Babcock (Aide-de-camp)

Colonel Ely S. Parker (Seneca attorney, engineer, and aide to Grant)

This remarkable photograph is not only a stunning piece of visual history but also an invaluable artifact documenting the key figures who orchestrated the Union war effort in the eastern theater. City Point served as General Grant’s headquarters and a major Union supply hub during the Siege of Petersburg, making this image an important visual link to one of the most critical campaigns of the war.

The albumen remains strong in contrast with only light aging typical of the period. The mount exhibits minor edge wear, but the overall presentation is clean and solid. A truly exceptional piece, suitable for prominent display or institutional collection.

Provenance:

Original Mathew Brady studio photograph, guaranteed authentic and of the period.
