In 1917, a Connecticut arms laboratory recorded Johnson's fastball at 134 feet per second, equal to ninety-nine miles per hour, a speed the lanky farmboy was somehow able to generate with a smooth sidearmed motion that baffled and terrified opposing batters. New York Highlanders outfielder Birdie Cree provided his own methodology for handling Johnson's speed: "When you see the arm start forward, swing." Presented is a scarce single from the inaugural class Hall of Famer, penned on the sweet spot of an Official American League (Harridge) baseball with red stitching. Johnson is one of the most desirable single signed baseballs on the market, and this particular example is top notch, with an incredibly bold autograph compared to most. Overall the ball remains in good condition given it's age baring light scuffing, scattered staining & even toning. Authenticators date the ball to the 1943-43 era. Stamping remains clear. Authenticated by James Spence Authentication (JSA) with a full letter of authenticity.
