If you ask anyone who was fortunate enough to see Roberto Clemente play during his seventeen year career as a Pittsburgh Pirate, they'll tell you Clemente was poetry in motion when he was patrolling right field. Whether he was catching a seemingly impossible ball in deep right field and throwing out a runner headed for third, or making a catch and twirling around se he threw it back into play, he was a joy to watch. He was also no slouch with the bat, achieving the elusive 3000 hit mark right before his tragic passing in December of 1972, following an All-Star year. Clemente would be rewarded by Major League Baseball with this 14K 1972 All-Star ring presented by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn to the Pirates legend prior to his passing. "All Star 1972" is engraved on the left side of the ring with the word "Baseball" and an MLB insignia on the right, a Claret Red Linde Star ruby set in the center. On the interior of the band is stamped "14K" and engraved "7-25-72 R. C.," matching other known 1972 MLB All-Star rings as having the date of the game and next to the player’s initials. It goes without question that Clemente would have had more presentations from the commissioner, but like many other crowned athletes he was taken by a air crash resulting in many wondering just how great Roberto Clemente could have been. Authenticated by Mile High Auctions with a full letter of authenticity.
