Herbert Hoover TLS and Galley Proof of 1934 Iowa Speech. 1p, measuring 7" x 9", Washington, D.C., dated August 20, 1954. Addressed to Jerry Milbank. A typed letter signed "Herbert" on Office of the Secretary of State letterhead. Hoover thanks Milbank for his "most heartening" note and passes on his good wishes. With a flattened mail fold. Boldly signed in blue ink.

The letter is accompanied by a galley proof of Hoover's August 10, 1954 Iowa Speech. 7pp, measuring 7" x 20", no place, Ca. August 10, 1954. An event was held in West Branch, Iowa, celebrating President Hoover's 80th birthday, and he delivered a speech that covered the topics of "The Safeguards of Free Men"; "Loosening of Family Ties, Corruption and Crime"; "The Communists"; "The Socialists"; "The Welfare State"; "The Common Man"; "Power of Federal and Local Government"; "Presidential Power"; and "Foreign and Military Policies". The proof has folds and is toned, with darker toning along the top edge. There is a small tear on the last page.

After his presidency, Hoover was offered a number of positions, including a Senate seat and various positions in the Kennedy administration, but he turned down these offers. He continued to make public appearances, however, and regained his popular reputation with his public work and self-deprecating humor.
