Partly-printed document signed as president, one page, 22" x 16.75", June 7th, 1858. Four language ship’s paper issued to “Benjamin Kelley, master or commander of the Ship called Henry Kneeland…lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with provisions, stores, and utensils for a whaling voyage.” Signed in the right panel by Buchanan and countersigned by Secretary of State Lewis Cass. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, uniform toning and remnants of prior separation that has been repaired with archival tape. The white wafer seal is toned and intact. Buchanan’s signature is large and crisp. An uncommon example enhanced by its desirable whaling connection. The document will include a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services.
