Lengthy Letter to The Man Who Broke Her Heart and Inspired Her Music Career!

Four beautifully hand-written pages to a boyfriend, a long love note as it seems. The content opens “To Peter” and begins to describe school work, presumably from her year at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. The letter is dated “7-26 evening” and is written in flowing blue tip fountain pen on four 8-1/2 x 11 pages. It proceeds to go into detail about her relationship with Peter and how this letter was in response to his correspondence. The pages show signs of being folded. The final paragraph includes, in part “The reason I wanted to write was just to tell you how beautiful your letter was – my first love letter…it was lovely Peter and I’m so glad you feel that way…I love you for all time and I want to be your wife if you’ll have me and I will try to make you so happy…please don’t go away…I love you so (signed) Janis”.

The "Peter" referenced by Joplin was her first love, a man by the name of Peter de Blanc. Joplin was briefly engaged to Peter de Blanc, a well-educated New Yorker, who eventually worked at IBM. De Blanc knew Joplin during her first stint in San Francisco, and the two corresponded by mail when Joplin moved back to Texas to get off drugs. The two became engaged in the fall of 1965, and Joplin began planning her wedding with her mother. Shortly thereafter, de Blanc broke off the engagement, providing an inspirational fuel for many of Joplin's songs at the time.

The script writing in blue ink rates an overall 8-9 with a strong signature. Original mailing envelope included. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication/JSA.
