A four-language ship's paper printed in English, Dutch, Spanish and French. These documents were like a passport, indicating that the vessel sailed under the protection of the United States. Partly-printed document signed, with each section in respective languages headed "James Madison, President of the United States," measuring to 16" x 20, signed May 26, 1809. Issued to Matthew Reed, master of the brig Eliza, "...bound for Zayal and laden with turpentine [unknown]." Countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith, and Collector of Customs of New York David Gelston. One vertical and four horizontal folds with some soiling, otherwise in fine condition. There are two white wafer and red wax seals intact. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
