The Dapper Don writes a pretty young admirer and gives a lesson on “Italian Class”

John Gotti was perhaps the last of a passing breed, a larger-than-life mob figure who enjoyed the limelight and celebrity status afforded him by the media. Nicknamed first the "Dapper Don" for his elegant style, and later the "Teflon Don" due to his numerous acquittals, Gotti's name today is as familiar to the American public as that of Al Capone, Lucky Luciano or Bugsy Siegel. After numerous failed attempts to prosecute him, he was finally convicted in 1992 under RICO charges in Brooklyn's federal district court. Sentenced to life in prison without parole, he eventually succumbed to cancer on June 10, 2002. Offered is a one-page handwritten letter penned by John Gotti in February of 2000 during his incarceration at the Federal Penitentiary in Marion, Illinois. Motivated by a letter a picture received from a beautiful young female admirer, Gotti responds, in part:

"I want to apologize for not responding sooner to your letter. My only excuse was it was only delivered this week. Thank you for all the good wishes and compliments. I also want to thank you for the photo. You are a beautiful young lady!...By the by, your brother looks like a real gentleman who cares for his sister. Tell him that’s Italian class. "

The letter is signed "Stay well and be happy! John Gotti" ("9") in black ink. Although the letter is undated, the envelope of transmittal, which is partially handwritten in Gotti’s hand and postmarked February 24, 2000, is included. The letter (8 1/2" x 11") exhibits folding impressions from transmission but is otherwise very fine. Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication (JSA).
