In 1917, a Connecticut arms laboratory recorded Johnson's fastball at 134 feet per second, equal to ninety-nine miles per hour, a speed the lanky farmboy was somehow able to generate with a smooth sidearmed motion that baffled and terrified opposing batters. New York Highlanders outfielder Birdie Cree provided his own methodology for handling Johnson's speed: "When you see the arm start forward, swing." Presented is a scarce single from the inaugural class Hall of Famer, penned on the sweet spot of a "Eastern League" ball with red and blue stitching that convincingly presents like an early twentieth century OAL baseball. Overall the ball remains in good condition given it's age baring light scuffing, scattered staining & even toning. A very tough single! Authenticated by PSA/DNA with a full letter of authenticity.
