Franklin Pierce enjoyed a close friendship with Jefferson Davis, one that endured throughout their lives, even during the Civil War. The two men had served in the Senate, though at different times. Pierce represented his home state of New Hampshire, while Davis represented Mississippi both before and after Pierce's presidency. Offered here is a military document dated February 9th, 1854 in which President Pierce appoints William K. van Bokkelen as Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain in the service of the United States. It is nicely hand signed at the conclusion by Pierce as President and Davis as Secretary of War. The white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains intact. In overall fine condition, with light soiling. This is a seldom seen dual-signed document by the pair! Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
