Roberto Clemente was inducted posthumously to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 after a fatal aviation accident on December 31, 1972 while attempting to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He finished his 1972 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates getting his 3,000th Major League hit. Playing 18 seasons with the Pirates, Clemente was a National League MVP, 12-time All-Star, 4-time batting champion, and 12-time Gold Glove winner. Clemente signed this 2.75-x 6-inch check, January 11, 1972, in the amount of $805.60 to an unknown Puerto Rican entity. Using a blue ball-point pen, Clemente signed “Roberto Clemente” on the bottom of the check. Handwriting (all in Spanish) and autograph both remain bold and the check is in overall fine condition with normal bank cancellation stamps and some errant notations.
