Original edition of the February 24, 1801 (Jefferson's first year in office) Poulson's American Daily Advertiser, declaring Jefferson as the winner of the presidential election over Aaron Burr. The announcement of Jefferson winning the presidential election is printed on the back of the inside front page of the newspaper, stating, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, had the votes of ten states, Aaron Burr, of New York, four. Thomas Jefferson, of Virginia, had been, agreeably to the constitution, elected President of the United States. The announcement also bears the text of a letter sent by President John Adams to the Senate. Ironically, such an important historical fact has been delegated to the back of the first page with humorously such more pressing issues saved for page one including foreign intelligence reports, and public service and sales announcements including a boat for sale, a concert at the City Tavern, 11,000 pounds of coffee for sale, as well as tar and turpentine. Well-preserved and in fine condition.
