Ronald Reagan, previously known for his work in Hollywood, gained national political attention in his speeches for conservative presidential contender Barry Goldwater in 1964. California Republicans were impressed with his political views and charisma and urged him to run for Governor in 1966. Though he initially turned them down, in 1965 he would reconsider, committing to test the waters by taking a speaking tour. He received so many calls for his own candidacy that in December 1965, he asked Nancy, "How do you say no to all these people?"

Written on stationary so new that his name is misspelled, offered here is a handwritten letter circa 1965 from Ronald Reagan as he discusses his potential campaign. The letter reads, in full: "Dear Mr. Velarde, I'm afraid there are no buttons, bumper stickers or literature as yet. I know some other volunteer groups around the state have such things but I am not connected in any way with those operations although naturally I'm glad to know there are people interested in my behalf. I appreciate your kind offer of support. Right now the firm of Spencer & Roberts & Ass. 1300 W. Olympic Blvd. L.A. are working to coordinate support and evaluate it and the would be the official headquarters for any activity regarding my feasible candidacy. Again thanks - Ronald Reagan". Written entirely in Reagan's hand in blue ink and signed at the conclusion.

Anything handwritten by Reagan is desirable, but something with this type of content hearkening to the beginning of his political career is beyond reproach. In fine condition with light toning and some handling wear to the thin rice paper stationary. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services (BAS).
